Apapane at O'hia Flowers

Hawaii Volcanoes, Nat'l Park

This view shows the pale white lower belly, vent and undertail coverts of the Apapane as it is perched to drink nectar from the flowers of this native O'hia tree. O'hia trees grow readily on old lava flows, and seem to be one of the first native trees to recolonize after a few decades have passed since the lava flowed to that area from the volcano.

It's great that you got a ventral shot of the Apapane.

BTW, the flower of the Ohia tree is called a Lehua.
