I saw several of these and I believe that they use to be used to make entry to the basements..

They were called "cellar Doors". there was even a song about them in the 30's about playing on them. Kids would use them to slide down on.

Marvelous capture of the quality of this old door. I remember trap doors to the "cellar". We had one in the first house we lived in.
