White-crowned Sparrow juvenile

Spanaway, Washington

The young birds are truly fun to watch. When they first show up in the yard they are usually just hours or less out of the nest. They stand on top of the food and wait for a parent to come and put it in their mouth. If the parent gets too far away, they run after it with their mouth open. When they fly their lack of control is obvious, sometimes having a hard time landing again. When they first get to the water they start slow but it doesn't take long for them to get the hang of it and like all youngsters they seem not to want to get out. In a few days they are more like an adult with different feathers. Still fun to watch, though.
