This image and the one from 2/2/2012 (pbase #141906458) are good for comparing the EF 1.4x II extender and the EF 2x III extenders.
This one, the 1.4x, actually seems to me to be a hair less sharp than the 2x but that could be because the distance on the one with the 2x is about 15% less.
