Indochine

I have fallen in love with Laos, its people and its culture..Despite Laos' tragic history its people are the friendliest, kindest and laidback people in South East Asia. There is a saying, "the Lao are either preparing for a party, having a party or recovering from a party", so true.

One has to remember that Laos rates as one of the poorest and least developed countries in the world. 85% of its income is derived from foreign aid. 40% of children under 5 years of age are malnourished. Another sad fact Laos has the unenviable reputation as the most bombed country on this planet ever as a result of bombing sorties by the Americans during the 2nd Indochinese War (Vietnam War). Over half a ton of bombs were dropped on Laos per person out of a population of 5 million people. Today it is estimated that between 10-15 million live bomblets (bombies as the Lao call them) litter the Lao countryside. Organisations like UXO Lao and MAG (Mines Advisory Group)who are doing wonderful work endevouring to clear the mess the Americans left. Laos is NOT the place to go trekking off the beaten track!!

I dedicate these galleries to Amanda, without her support they would not be possible.

A special thanks to Miss Nui, Somphao, Mr Keo, Mone & Yangxia.

Our good friend Mr Keo passed away on November 12th 2007. He died peacefully in his home after a month's stay in hospital. He is now with his God and no longer in pain.
