Kracow is arguably the most beautiful city in Poland. It was first founded in the 7th century and was the capital of Poland till early 17th century. It boasts of a rich cultural and architectural heritage and has been classified by UNESCO as a world cultural heritage site. Unlike most other Polish cities, Kracow survived World War II largely thanks to the moral conscience of the commander of the German garrison. The Pope John Paul II was the city's cardinal before being elected to his present office. Among the cities illustrous figures, one should also include Nicholas Coppernicus, whose alma mater, Collegium Maius, still keeps Latin inscriptions in many of its funtion halls.
