Bruges and Gent, two western Belgium cities, are noted for their historic importance in the region's commerce. The former, with its turrets, spires and canals, is particularly representative of the Flander cultural traditions. It has long been known as the Venice of the North and was rightly named the European Capital of Culture in 2002. Of the Belgium cities I visited, Bruges is undoubtedly the most charming medieval town.
