The Bali Island, also known as the island of gods, lies just 8 degrees south of the equator in the Indian Ocean, with a surface area of about 5600 km2. Unlike other parts of Indonesia, the population is predominantly Hindu. Religion is deeply influential in local customs and traditions. Giants statues of Hindu gods grace most public squares and shrines of various sizes dot all gardens. On the most important Hindu festival, even the Denpasar international airport is closed for one day. The island has a highly-developed tourist infrastructure in line with its reputation of a world-class island resort.
