This is the first really quiet, thoughtful collecton I've seen yet of modern-day Iraq, one minus all noise of political frenzy and intent. Because it's wartime b&w imagery, it's got an unavoidably documentary feel, but I personally get less a sense of being shown something here than of materializing into the middle of it, alone and at a safe enough distance to process and contemplate. You've blown current events like sand into a mildly nostalgic, nagging past; I can't stop returning to these pics.

They are all good photos but the bathroom graffiti images are the most compelling and insightful photographs about this war that I've seen yet. These are the real voices of the men over there. They could be a series completely unto themselves.

This is a fantastic portfolio for a whole lot of reasons, but mainly because every image in the series has some meaningful content, provides a unique insight, and basically has a story to tell. Hope you can get them published if you want to. They deserve it, both for their quality and for their unique perspective. I'm glad you used these cameras. It's hard to find a subject where they are effective, but here they convey the messages, I believe, far better than if you had been using high-resolution color images that we are all so immune to. I started using some cameras I rescued from a thrift shop, and like with a Holga, I found myself wishing I had brought my "good" camera. Another member of PBase who teaches seminars says that an element of abstraction add power to the image because it leaves room for reader's imagination. These junk camera images support that idea with their monochrome and focus, etc. I think one of the biggest challenges for a photographer is to work on a project like this, where the subject is their everyday surroundings. To be able to recognize a story, and capture it. And most of all, to do it again and again and again. In my opinion, it's project work like this that really commands respect and attention.
