In some regions of Aomori the ubiquitous Torii gates outside Shinto shrines have a little twist; they are decorated with statues of Oni (鬼), or something vaguely like a Western ogre.

There are around 35 shrines with such statues around Aomori prefecture in the north of Honshu island.
