The Aomori Nebuta festival is probably the largest of the the summer festivals in the neighbouring area and one of the three most famous festivals in the Tohoku region. The Nebuta are made of Japanese washi paper laid over a wire frame and painted. These are drawn or occasionally carried through the streets, accompanied by Taiko drums, flutes and 'Haneto' dancers in traditional costume carrying bells. Designs usually reflect legends or religious figures.
