What is a photo-birder?

A photo-birder (photobirder) is a birder who maintains a life lists of his/her photographed birds. From my perspective, photo-birding is about taking photographs to document observations that aid in bird identification. My photo-list also contains relevant information such as date and location because some species cannot easily be identified by pictures alone (ie. Cordilleran Flycatcher vs Pacific-slope Flycatcher). When needed I also verify that the bird’s vocalization is consistent with its identification. As most serious bird listers do, I report my life list count to the American Birding Association in the “Photographed ABA area”category and abide by the American Birding Association's Code of Birding Ethics.

I am neither a master birder nor photographer but a student of both endeavors. I continually seek to refine my birding skills but occasionally make mistakes. If you find a misidentified bird picture please let me know, it helps me and others who visit this gallery. My favorite field guide is the National Geographic Field Guide to the Birds of North America, Sixth Edition.
