Cradle Mountain National Park , Tasmania, Australia
A two day trip to see the fagus in colour for the first time, by me that is. The weather was kind in that we weren't rained out however the cloud cover was low and obscured Cradle Mountain and the peaks of other mountains in the Park most of the time.
Deciduous beech (Nothofagus gunnii) - or fagus as it is best-known - is a small tree usually growing to 2 metres or less. This small Tasmanian tree is Australia's only winter-deciduous tree, and it is found nowhere else in the world except Tasmania.
