Attracted to the West Coast of Canada by rich limestone deposits vital for cement production,
Robert Pim Butchart built a factory at Tod Inlet, on Vancouver Island.
There, in 1904, he and his family established their home.
In 1909, when the quarry was exhausted, Robert's wife, Jennie set about turning it into the Sunken Garden, which was completed in 1921.
The only surviving portion of Mr. Butchart's Tod Inlet cement factory is the tall chimney of a long vanished kiln,
seen in the upper right of this photo.
