D.L. liked to play chess. We played a lot in Miss Davies' classroom during breaks. He used to say that he was a descendant of Robert. E. Lee (I believe his real name was David Lee Reeder.) I can imagine he gave Miss Davies a hard time about. Funny story.

Two things I remember about D.L. that capture his personality and humor so well:
(1) It was the first day in class and a teacher (Miss Davies?) asked D.L. what his real name was. He said "D.L." She proceeded to ask again an again from several different angles what his real name was, and he would always say "D.L." "What does D.L. stand for?" He'd say "D.L." Finally, she asked "If you were to spell out your full name how would you spell it?" So he said straight-faced: "D period L period." Everyone cracked up.
(2) I had a party in 8th grade in my basement. My parents were big into supervising and coming downstairs every few minutes. D.L. went upstairs and started "chatting up" my parents in the den. He and my stepfather talked about stereo components, life, whatever, and he regaled my mother with humorous stories about himself and his opinions on everything under the sun. He was thoroughly enjoying himself, and the three of them (DL and my parents) were having their own party upstairs. I think DL stayed and talked to my parents for most of the night. We were all grateful that he kept them occupied for so long and out of our hair downstairs, and my mother spoke of nothing but "That dynamic D.L. Reeder" for several years.
