If you were a runner from Maine the place to be was on Sunday April 20th was in Boston for the 7th running of the women's olympic trials marathon. Four Maine women including Joan Benoit Samuelson, Sheri Piers, Emily Levan and Kristen Barry qualified for the trials with a prior sub 2:47 marathon. Penny McDermott, a 33 year old Farmington Me native, also qualified. Several of us drove down from Maine early Sunday morning. It was well worth the 4:00 AM rising to be part of this great event and to cheer the runners. The Maine women all had outstanding races, particularly Sheri (who was #16 overall in 2:38:46 with a 7 minute PR) and Joan who set a new US 50-59 age group marathon record in 2:49:08 for age 50+. Joan, thank you for all you have done for running.
