The bronze statue of John Harvard that sits before Harvard's University Hall was created by Daniel Chester French and presented to the University in 1884. A common misconception is that John Harvard founded the University, but it was instead named for him. Year after year students and tourists, (many of whom are proud parents), rub the left foot of the statue for luck and have polished the metal to a bright shine. The young freshman from Argentina who told me this bit of trivia, looked momentarily sheepish, then asked, "You didn't touch it yet, did you?" When I answered him, "no, I hadn't", he grinned and said, "good, the seniors pee on it."!
