The hamlet of Montauk is the eastern-most municipality on the south shore of Long Ialand, New York. The community has a population of about 4,000 persons which can increase considerably during its high recreation season of summer and fall. During the summer, its location on the Atlantic Ocean attracts beach-goers, surfers and sport fishermen while in the fall, surf fishing becomes a major attraction. Commercial fishing is also very important.

The municipality is home to the first lighthouse in New York State which is now the fourth oldest active lighthouse in the United States. Montauk is a major tourist destination and boasts six state parks.
