Chelsea is a neighborhood on the lower West Side of Manhattan in New York City south of Midtown and north of Greenwich Village. The neighborhood is a mix of residential and commercial uses with the western portion becoming a center of the New York art scene with many galleries opening in renovated warehouses and new construction. An important new attraction in Chelsea is the High Line, a former elevated railway in downtown New York City which has been saved from demolition and preserved as an elevated park. The New York City Department of Parks and Recreation has restored approximately one mile with a walkway and a wide variety of plantings in vegetation and flower beds. The park is a huge success with the public and has generated commercial and architectural innovations in the adjacent neighborhood. An additional one-half mile section is in the planning stages for completion.
