March 7, 1970 Solar Eclipse

On March 7, 1970 there was a total eclipse of the sun that was visible from the southeastern part of the United States. I was a senior in high school and an avid amateur astronomer so I desperately wanted to see this rare event. Along with 3 friends from the school astronomy club and my father, we rented a 1970 Mercury Marquis station wagon and drove the 820 miles from Mt. Clemens Michigan to Williamston North Carolina. We camped at the Green Acres Family Campground which was only 4 miles from the center line of the eclipse. This site gave us 2 minutes and 52 seconds of totality. The trip turned out great. We had no problems and the skies were wonderfully clear for the eclipse. This gallery highlights this journey and the eclipse.

What wonderful photos! I googled Green Acres Campground Eclipse March 7, 1970 and these photos came up. Thank you so much for posting. I was 10 years old at the time and lived just a mile down the road from Green Acres. I was there that day and will never forget the experience. This year's eclipse has brought up the old memories. The owners of Green Acres are lifelong friends and still there. I wish this year's eclipse were a little closer, but will always cherish the 1970 event. Not many people are that lucky. Thank you again.

I love these pictures and the memories. I saw this eclipse from Nantucket. I also built a homemade 6" reflector using many similar parts! Clear skies!

Great photos. I remember that eclipse, but we weren't so lucky. A couple of friends at University of Texas and I drove from Austin, Texas to Perry, Florida. It was cloudy all day, and we never saw the sun. The clouds just got darker at totality. Somebody had a portable TV, and we watched the eclipse from Mexico on the TV. I think there was even a group that had come all the way from Italy.
