La vida en el monasterio comienza en el siglo VII. Santo Domingo comienza la construcción del claustro en el siglo XI y se termina en el XII.
El claustro es un cuadrilátero con 16 arcos (17 capiteles) en las galerías Norte y Sur, y 14 arcos (15 capiteles) en las alas Oriente y Poniente; en total son, pues, 60 arcos y 64 capiteles. Tiene dos niveles, claustro inferior y claustro superior, exactamente superpuesto el de arriba al de abajo. Se considera el claustro románico más importante de España.
