Methuen RR Station

Methuen had two stops along the Manchester & Lawrence Branch of the Boston and Maine Railroad. This is the Methuen Depot at the corner of Union and Railroad Streets.
According to wikipedia, "The Manchester and Lawrence RR was chartered in 1847 and opened in November 1849. It leased the newly built Methuen Branch from the Boston and Maine Railroad, which opened in August 1849 and ran from South Lawrence through Methuen to the state line where the two lines met."
According to "A Field Guide to Southern New England Railroad Depots and Freight Houses", The first depot in Methuen was built in 1851 by the Concord RR. It was replaced just eleven years later with a second frame structure. By the 1890s the local townspeople had become displeased with the accommodations and petitioned the railroad for a better station. After many years of waiting, Edward F. Searles, a major stockholder of the Boston & Maine RR, initiallty donated the land and paid for the construction of a new station. Designed by H. B. Fletcher and opened on July 13, 1908, this would he the third and final station to serve Methuen.
Passenger service here ended June 1953, and since then the building has been used for commercial purposes. Although it was renovated in the 1980s the handsome brick depot no longer sports its covered stairs and carriage way located on the east side of the structure. The station at Shawsheen is very similar."
