Jewel/Royal Theatre

The Jewel Theater at 488 Merrimack Street was opened as a movie house in 1911 by Charles Harpoot in the first floor of a 4 story building. In 1913, Motion Picture World magazine reported that Harpoot found business so good he purchased property across the street at 507 Merrimack and built a new 1200 seat theater he called "The New Jewel." Though he had planned to close the original, it operated as the Royal as early as 1914 under the ownership of several families until 1964. The auditorium and balcony exists today behind a storefront in a dilapidated state. The building is now condemned.
