These gentlemen were super nice and friendly. I visited with them for about 15 minutes about New Orleans, some good places to eat, their neighbor hood, Super Sunday etc. I asked them if I could make a group picture and they were happy to oblige. After I made the shot we all shook hands and they wished me well. Coming from conservative Oklahoma the gestures puzzle me. I did some research on this and found something that does not explain but is still fascinating. Keep in mind I am not testifying to its accuracy.

Before the Battle of Agincourt in 1415, the French, anticipating victory over the English, proposed to cut off the middle finger of all captured English soldiers. Without the middle finger it would be impossible to draw the renowned English longbow and therefore they would be incapable of fighting in the future. This famous English longbow was made of the native English Yew tree, and the act of drawing the longbow was known as 'plucking the yew' (or 'pluck yew').

Much to the bewilderment of the French, the English won a major upset and they began mocking the French by waving their middle fingers at the defeated French, saying, See, we can still pluck yew! Since 'pluck yew' is rather difficult to say, the difficult consonant cluster at the beginning has gradually changed to a labiodentalfricative 'F', and thus the words often used in conjunction with the one-finger-salute! It is also because of the pheasant feathers on the arrows used with the longbow that the symbolic gesture is known as 'giving the bird.'

Great Photo...Interesting History Of "The Finger."

Great shot of this group...not sure if some of the hand signs are gang signs. When I shot for Lifetouch National School Photography, they told us to be aware that kids did not make gang signs when we took their pictures. The faces and pose in this image is fabulous. Details and processing nice. v

well pluck me that is an interesting origin theory...the image is certainly lively and engaging...the one man making 'hand pistols' does seem a tad intimidating...V

Learn something new every day. It's funny that now many Brits, of all people, do not do this, but rather wave what a lot of people consider to be the two fingered peace gesture, with the backs of their fingers pointing to the object of their scorn.

Not looking so English or French here and your explanation going back 600 years probably has no bering here! This kinda reminds me of the time back in the 70’s driving through Compton, CA and WOW! I felt lucky to get out of there alive. Great shot but as someone said kinda sad too.

What an excellent group shot - a reward for your visit - hope you sent them a copy. Love the gesture origin story which seems plausible. Wonder if the gestures were spontaneous or at your suggestion...

Ok so this image makes the viewer feel that they are either going to be "plucked" or shot depending on whom you chose to focus your attention on in the scene. That element of danger safely viewed from behind the computer screen makes for a terrific capture.

I am not convinced they are all that friendly...

A very positive interpretation of the hand gestures. The visual impact is powerful and provides the viewer the opportunity to make their own interpretation. With that said, this is an amazing and dynamic image. This may be one of your best in this series. VVV
