85L vs STF

85L on the LEFT, STF on the RIGHT. To be a fair comparison both lenses are shot with an APS-C size sensor camera.

These two images are shot at different distance from the subject, both at wide open. You can tell the DOF of the 85L is shallower, the background is more blurry.

Update: Some interesting facts.

The DOF characteristics of these two lenses are actually closer than I thought. Let’s say the subject is 10ft away, both lenses shot at wide open, the DOF would be –
STF: 0.18ft
85L: 0.19ft

Of course, this is given that both lenses are shot from the same distance to the subject. The 85L in the real world would move in a little closer to get the similar field of view (FOV, or crop) ON THE SUBJECT. This could also mean the perspective is changed a little bit, meaning the relationship of the subject versus the background would be different.
Even if I say, move in 2 ft, the DOF will be –
85L: 0.12ft
It is shallower than the STF in real world shooting situations.
