The views from the top: The outdoor terrace at 1,834 metres is the main event. On a clear day, the panorama includes the distinctive Watzmann massif to the west — at 2,713 metres, the third-highest mountain in Germany — the Untersberg plateau to the northwest, and the Berchtesgadener Alps extending south into Austria and, of course, the famous Königssee. On the clearest days, Salzburg’s Festung Hohensalzburg is visible in the distance. The views are different in character from the Zugspitze — less vertiginous, more intimate with the surrounding mountains.
