The Marktplatz in Berchtesgaden is the historic market square at the heart of the town's Altstadt in Upper Bavaria, a compact pedestrian center framed by colourful Bavarian facades and traditional mural painting. The square is anchored by the Marktbrunnen, first erected in 1558, with a central pillar bearing a lion added in 1628 and a marble basin from 1677. Visitors often stroll the square to browse cafés and shops and use it as a starting point for exploring the town and nearby alpine sights such as Lake Königssee and the Watzmann.
