In Ramsau, you experience an authentic alpine community—framed by mighty mountains. Here, hospitality is part of everyday life, traditions are kept alive, and nature sets the rhythm. As Germany’s first mountaineering village, Ramsau has long stood for a future shaped by sustainability. Around two-thirds of the municipality lies within Germany’s only Alpine national park. Here, you’ll encounter the iconic Watzmann (2,713 meters) and the Blaueis, the northernmost glacier in the Alps.
The history of Ramsau began with the founding of the Berchtesgaden Abbey in the year 1121, when brave monastery brothers cleared dark forests and steep rocky peaks to create this mountain paradise. In the late 13th century, Ramsau was first mentioned in historical documents as “Ramsaw,” and the village has been enchanting visitors ever since.
