The Musikverein’s Goldener Saal (Golden Hall) is widely considered the finest concert acoustic in the world. Designed in 1870 by Theophil Hansen as the headquarters of the Society of the Friends of Music (Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde), the Musikverein hosts roughly 800 concerts per year across five halls, with the Vienna Philharmonic’s New Year’s Day Concert in the Golden Hall as its most famous event. The Musikverein’s Golden Hall is the reference acoustic of classical music. Recording engineers fly orchestras into Vienna specifically to record albums in this room. The reasons are partly architecture, partly fortunate accident: The hall is 48.8 meters long, 19.1 meters wide, and 17.75 meters high — a “shoebox” rectangle that bounces sound predictably between parallel walls. Modern halls often use fan or vineyard shapes; the shoebox remains acoustically supreme.
