In 1977, the City of Paris changed the name of the Place du Théâtre Français to Place André Malraux. It is a large square in the 1st arrondissement, a crossroads of major urban arteries (Avenue de l'Opéra, Rue Saint-Honoré, Rue de Montpensier, Rue de Richelieu, Place Colette), located very close to the Comédie Française. The two fountains in the square (known as the "Fountains of the Théâtre Français") were erected by Gabriel Davioud in 1874. The beautification of the area was part of the plans of Baron Haussmann, who had the square built in 1867.
