Suckling pig market square
The Place du Marché-aux-Cochons-de-Lait (in Alsatian : Ferikelmärik )is a square in Strasbourg administratively attached to the Centre district. Close to the cathedral, it runs from the Place de la Grande-Boucherie to the Rue du Maroquin. Since 1973, it has been part of the city's first pedestrian area and features prominently in the tourist imagination of Western Europe.
Why this name?
For a simple reason:the pig market square hosted a market where the famous pig was sold(Ferkelmarkt or Ferikelmärik ).From 1240 , the site housed the timber market ( Holzmerket ).It was only since 1792 that the small square specialized in the pork trade (or suckling pig market).
