The Dreieinigkeitskirche, whose original name was Church of the Holy Trinity ) is a Protestant, early Baroque , pillarless aisle church on Gesandtenstrasse , in the old town of Regensburg . The church was built from 1627 to 1631 according to plans by Hanns Carl and was one of the first new Evangelical Lutheran churches to be built in Bavaria . The church is considered to be the largest new church building in the then free imperial city of Regensburg and is a popular destination for visitors because of the climbable church tower with a view over the old town. Another attraction is the southern churchyard accessible from the church. In the course of the fighting around Regensburg that began in 1632 , at the request of the Swedish army commander Bernhard von Sachsen-Weimar, a burial took place in the churchyard after the Bavarian occupying troops had forced the completion of the church building and before the start of final construction work on the southern churchyard during the Thirty Years' War high Swedish officer and at the request of some exulant families also to some reburials of deceased exulantsfrom Austria who had helped finance the construction of the Protestant church.
