Regensburg. Kohlenmarkt

Between Domplatz and Rathausplatz is a square typical of Regensburg's old town, the so-called "Kohlenmarkt". The square got its name from and is derived from its former purpose as a charcoal market for the blacksmiths and citizens of the city.Delimited in the east by Goliathstrasse, which then leads into Wahlenstrasse, this stretch of road describes the former north-west wall of the Roman fort Castra Regina. If you look at the west side, you look directly at the baroque new building of the old town hall (1660-62/1706). Town houses with baroque facades catch the eye on the north and east side.At the southern end of the Kohlenmarkt is the smaller Zieroldsplatz, which splits into two small streets to the north. Since the 1970s, this small square has provided the framework for the monument to the famous son of the city of Regensburg - Don Juan d`Austria. Emerging from a liaison between the Roman-German Emperor Charles V and the Regensburg Gürtler daughter Barbara Blomberg, he is now regarded as the victorious general of the naval battle at Lepanto against the Ottoman fleet in 1571
