Regensburg. Salzstadel

Right next to the stone bridge is the Regensburger Salzstadel. It was built between 1616 and 1620. In order to create space for the Amberger Stadel, as it was originally called, an arch of the stone bridge was filled in. The construction became necessary because the emperor had granted the city the right to trade in salt. The salt for Regensburg has mostly come from Bad Reichenhall since the 13th century and was a very lucrative business for the city for centuries. It was brought to Regensburg by ship on the Danube. Salt was very valuable at that time, it was often worth its weight in gold. The massive construction was reinforced again and again to carry the heavy loads. Even today you can admire the centuries-old mighty pillars and huge oak planks.
