What began as a Roman army camp 2,000 years ago developed into the Manhattan of the Middle Ages. Long-distance trade on the Danube brought immense wealth to the city. The "skyscrapers of the Middle Ages" emerged, one after the other. The city flourished and became a "megacity". Regensburg was the center of Europe for almost 150 years when the Everlasting Reichstag took place here in the 17th century. Emperors and kings, envoys and ministers walked in and out of the Imperial Hall every day. And Regensburg was lucky. The World War II bombs spared the old town. That's why today you can experience the best-preserved medieval city in Germany with over 1000 monuments. Regensburg is a city like a living history book. There are only a few cities in Germany in which millennia-old history can still be experienced so vividly. The picturesque world heritage city with its patrician towers, the narrow streets, the princely palace and the towering Gothic cathedral not only impresses Regensburg from afar.
