Nürnberg. Weißgerbergasse

The Weißgerbergasse is home to Nuremberg's largest ensemble of old craftsmen's houses. Mostly half-timbered, the historic town houses, often with their own well and garden, bear witness to the prosperity that leather craftsmanship brought with it. Instead of the busy tanners of the Middle Ages, cafés, bars, small shops and handicraft businesses now enliven Weißgerbergasse.Once you have passed the Weinmarkt in a westerly direction from the main market, past the north side of the Sebalduskirche, you suddenly feel like you have been transported back to the Middle Ages. More than twenty historic craftsmen's houses on Weißgerbergasse survived the Second World War unscathed. Lavishly and lovingly restored by the owners with great support from Nuremberg's Old Town Friends, its architecture gives at least a glimpse of the hustle and bustle in the old tanning district.
