House of the Red Ox
The Haus zum Roten Ochsen is a Renaissance building on the Fischmarkt in Erfurt and is considered one of the most beautiful of its kind in Germany.The building is first mentioned in 1392 and was redesigned in 1562 by the Waid dealer and chief councilor Jacob Naffzer (ca. 1529-1586).The red ox in the center of the frieze above the ground flooOn the façade above the ground floor there is a frieze depicting the Muses and the ancient planetary gods. In the middle is the eponymous red ox with golden horns.On the first floor there is a richly furnished Renaissance hall where many exhibitions are held. The house is the seat of the Erfurt Art Association .Since 1979 the building, which was renovated at the time, has been used as a " Galerie am Fischmarkt" (from 2000 = Kunsthalle Erfurt ) after it served not only as a residential building, but also as a commercial building from the 18th century and in the first half of the 20th century a cinema had found a place in it.
