Girona (El Gironès)

They were first detected in Spain in 1975, but now they have become a major environmental problem. For the first time, Spain has seen a spike in the number of monk parakeets in urban areas. According to a survey conducted by 600 volunteers from the ornithologist group SEO/Birdlife, there are now some 20,000 of these exotic bright green birds flying free in some 450 Spanish cities.

This is happening here in Australia too. Firs it was introduced species from overseas but in recent decades escaped aviary pets that were endemic to certain states have now taken up residence in other states. They often outcompete local species for food and nesting places. V

They are so beautiful! It is a shame they have spread so much, but often it is humans who introduce them in the first place, not the bird's fault! V

They are very cute, but it is too bad they are becoming a problem. V

They will be pretty, but I would put a lot of lead in them! Here, in Malaga, these parrots have exterminated the native sparrows. V
