Basílica de Santa María
The Basilica of Santa Maria de Mataró, located in the center of the old town of Mataró, is the oldest church in the city and is declared a Cultural Asset of National Interest.Baroque and neoclassical in style, the current parish houses important paintings. It has a height of 34.6 meters and consists of a single nave with side chapels.The current building corresponds to the extension begun in 1675 by the Milanese architect Ercolle Torrellio. However, by 1054 there were references to a Romanesque church in the current location of the temple. The 19th century façade is the work of Josep Simó i Fontcuberta.The Chapel of the Sorrows, decorated and painted by Antoni Viladomat, is one of the main attractions of the temple. The lush decoration of this magnificent Baroque work leaves no one indifferent. The meeting room of the Congregation of Sorrows, which contains a valuable pictorial ensemble that follows the octagonal shape of the room, is not far behind either.
