The Lake of Banyoles and its lake basin are considered to be the most extensive karstic complex on the Iberian Peninsula. It is a unique natural area of outstanding geological, environmental, scenic and cultural value, situated in the Girona region of the Pla de lEstany, bordering Banyoles and Porqueres. The formation of the Lake of Banyoles goes back to the Quaternary period.(around 250,000 years ago) and can be in part explained by the tectonic movements that resulted in the Pyrenees. A series of subsequent karst phenomena caused sinking and subsidence which led to the formation of the lake zone. The lake is fed by waters from subterranean aquifers.Visitors who come to Banyoles to visit the lake arrive by the so-called Front dEstany. This is the eastern shore where you can enjoy the landscape with a pleasant and tranquil walk through banana trees.
