Sant Pol has its origins in the monastery of Sant Pau, the first documents of which date from the 10th century. In the Middle Ages, the town lived a period of splendor due, in large part, to the wealth and economic activity generated by the monastery. Between the 11th and 14th centuries, it was the period of its greatest splendor, when it became an important cultural center with a library and a scriptorium, and in which the prior of Sant Pau was in charge of buying the books for the king. But at the end of the 15th century, the monks left the monastery due to the general economic crisis, the plagues and the civil wars, and it was not until the 16th century that its recovery began. In 1599 Sant Pol became independent from Sant Cebrià, becoming its own municipality with vineyards, wine marketing with America and a fishing activity. In 1859, with the arrival of the train, the development of the industrial sector was experienced, which together with a diversified agriculture (olive, vineyard, almond, carob and strawberry) and an imported fishing sector, gave life to a new stage of growth and prosperity. From the beginning of the 20th century, it became famous and consolidated as a summer resort for families from Barcelona and the surrounding area.
