Main Chapel
The chapel, dedicated to the Holy Cross, was under the patronage of Alberti family (aside from the altar, patroned by Alamanni).Around 1380 Agnolo Gaddi – son of the more famous Taddeo and last of the followers of Giotto – frescoed the walls with The Legend of the True Cross. The stories, painted with great liveliness, are based on the book entitled Golden Legend written by Jacopo da Varagine. The reading order of the cycle, describing the many events that happened to the Holy Cross, is from the top to the bottom starting from the right side wall. The light comes in through the stained glass windows, most of them made following the drawings of Agnolo and his workshop.
