Flanked by this rugged, mountainous area, the district of Liébana covers more than 750 sq metres. The scenery defines valleys with a numerous of small villages always with quite a distance between each of them. A great part of them situated in the lower parts of the valley, protected from strong wind and close to the riverbanks of the region – Deva and Quiviesa – that both flow into the sea of Cantabria. We could say that Liébana – located in the most occidental part of the Cantabria region – is a privileged district. One of the reasons is the microclimate, due to its geographical situated as well as the immense diversity of flora and fauna. The regions can raise from sea level to the 2,600 m of the Picos de Europa, for example, Peña Vieja (2,613 m) or Peña Remoña (2,239 m)
