Berlin. Zionskirche

The Zionskirche (Church of Zion) has played an important role in Berlin's history. This is where Dietrich Bonhoeffer worked at the beginning of the 1930s. Before the fall of the Berlin Wall, opposition groups met at the church. The protests following the search of the 'environmental library' in 1987 showed just how important the church's opposition to the GDR regime was.The Zionskirche was built in the neo-romantic style in 1872 using terracotta bricks, which was very typical of the Historicist movement that was so popular in Berlin at the time. Bombed during the Second World War, the church was plundered by locals looking for firewood. For protection, the ground floor windows were walled in. Despite several renovations, the church was not opened to the public again until 2002.Today, the church is a place of worship, but also a place of great historical interest.
