Sintra. Palácio Nacional da Pena

Construction of the new palace started in 1840 and the king consort would spend his whole life realizing his dream castle. It was finally completed in 1885, the year he died at the age of sixty-nine. The design of the palace is the result of the romanticist movement of the nineteenth century during which artists often portrayed history with idyllic nostalgia. The architect, the German Ludwig von Eschwege, created a fascinating mixture of revival styles, with neo-Manueline, Oriental, Renaissance and even Egyptian motifs. In 1910, when the monarchy was overthrown, the palace became a national museum.
