estanyol del Vilar is the largest of the little ponds that are located around Lake Banyoles. Located just south of the border with the neighboring municipality of Porqueres, between the lake and the ring road and is connected to the lake through an artificial channel. The shape of "8" betrays us that actually consists of two karst subsidence together with a maximum depth of approximately 20 meters.
One of the secrets of the little ponds is that each has unique characteristics. The pond of Vilar allows us to compare the color of the water in the pond, an intense dark green, and the lake, and often more transparent light blue (the color of the sky or the incidence of light). The reason is the difference in the amount of phytoplankton (microscopic unicellular algae) and the fact that in the pond of Vilar there are many more nutrients than in the lake itself
