The covered church step is the most important inner-city link between the Hauptgasse and the Schlossberg. It was built in 1818 by the master carpenter Boxdörfer from Thun, and replaced the old, steep Stalden. The stairs are made from Alpine limestone plates. The straight, Neo-classical staircase, framed by a stone portal (1817) on the Hauptgasse is characteristic. At the top of the stairs there is a pavilion from the year 1820 with a ceiling painted by Roman Tschabold (1959). The pavilion is a romantic rotunda with eight wooden pillars below a polygonal roof. The slate roofing and the roof box are also remarkable.
