Thun is one of Switzerland's most distinctive towns, located in an admirable spot. Originally built on a small island in the Aare, where the river flows out of Lake Thun, the town developed bit by bit on the neighbouring banks. Whereas the old quarters cluster on the Aare's right bank, the modern town with its metallurgical factories extends along the left bank.
