Sculptor Eugène Simonis from Liège designed this bronze statue which was put up at Simon Stevinplein square in 1846. It was the first statue to be erected in 19th-century Bruges. The sculpture commemorates Bruges mathematician and scientist Simon Stevin (1548 - 1620) who introduced decimal fractions. His motto was ‘Wonder is no wonder’.
