Briones. Iglesia de Santa María de la Asunción

The Church of Santa Maria de la Asuncion was constructed in the 16th century and is located in the Plaza de España. The facade has a Plateresque design, the work of Juan Martinez de Mutio. The high tower has a Baroque design and was the work of Martin de Veratua and finished in 1760. The interior of the church has three naves and is covered with starred vaults that are supported by cylindrical pillars. There are several chapels with wonderful altarpieces, paintings, and tombs. The main altar has a classic design and was made in 1626 by Hernando de Murillas. The second floor is located at the back of the church and has a beautiful choir with carved wooden chairs and a beautiful Rococo organ. The sacristy is decorated with many paintings, Baroque mirrors and displays many priestly vestments.
